Osaka’s Kansai International Airport stands on an island in Osaka Bay, and two railways and an airport bus run from it into the city in 35 to 60 minutes; for a shorter stop, a free bus runs six minutes to an observation hall over the runway, and one train stop across the bridge is Rinku Town’s outlet mall.

Two railways and a bus run from Kansai Airport into Osaka

Kansai Airport station, across a walkway from Terminal 1, serves two railways. The private Nankai line runs to Namba, the southern hub by the Dotonbori canal: its Airport Express makes twelve stops in 45 to 50 minutes for 970 yen with no reservations, and the Rapi:t, a faster express on the same track, takes 34 to 38 minutes for 1,670 yen, every seat reserved. Japan Railways’ Haruka airport express train runs to Tennoji, in south-central Osaka, in about 30 minutes, then on to Osaka Station in about 45 and Shin-Osaka, the bullet-train station, in about 50; overseas visitors can buy discounted one-way tickets from 1,300 yen, and a Haruka ticket bought ahead scans straight through the gate. From Namba, the main Osaka guide walks the Dotonbori canal and Kuromon market.

The airport limousine bus, a coach run by local bus companies, leaves the stops outside Terminal 1 every 15 minutes through the day for Osaka Station in Umeda, the northern business district, in about an hour, for 1,800 yen from the ticket machines; airport bus tickets can also be booked ahead. Terminal 2, used by low-cost airlines, connects to Terminal 1 and the station by a free shuttle bus.

Runway views from the Sky View observation hall

The Sky View observation hall stands at the edge of the airport island, six minutes from Terminal 1 on a free bus that leaves from bus stop 1 on the arrivals floor every 30 minutes. From the hall, jets taxi past Terminal 1’s long curved roof with the control tower behind; it’s free to enter and open from 10am to 5pm, and its small Sky Museum on aviation opens from 11am to 4pm.

Rinku Town’s outlet mall, one stop across the bridge

Rinku Town, on the mainland at the far end of the bridge from the airport island, is the first stop on both railways, about six minutes from Kansai Airport station. Rinku Premium Outlets, six minutes’ walk from Rinku Town station along the bay, has more than 250 shops in low colonial-style buildings, with the Rinku Gate Tower Building rising behind them.

Coin lockers at Kansai Airport

Kansai Airport’s coin lockers stand on the first and second floors of Terminal 1, open 24 hours, from 300 yen a day for the smallest to 1,200 yen for a locker that takes a large suitcase, for up to ten days. The free bus to Sky View and the train to Rinku Town are both easier without one, and in the city a luggage storage point near Namba sits on the way back to the Nankai platform.

Collect the bag on the way back to the platform, and allow the full ride plus the walk to Terminal 1: about 40 minutes from Namba on the Rapi:t, closer to an hour on the slower trains.
