Geneva Airport Layover: Ferney and GVA

Geneva Airport sits four kilometres from the city and thirteen minutes by bus from Ferney-Voltaire on the French side of the border, where Voltaire’s own château and its grounds are open daily, which makes this one of the few airports in Europe where the nearest thing worth seeing is in a different country.

Voltaire bought the estate at Ferney in 1758, when he was sixty-four and wanted somewhere close enough to Geneva to be useful and far enough outside it to be safe, moved in three years later, and stayed until he died in 1778. He pulled down most of the old house and rebuilt it, laid out the gardens, and put enough work and money into the village that it grew from a few dozen inhabitants into a small town, which is why it carries his name today. The house, its contents and the grounds are covered by one ticket at 9 euros, free for under-26s resident in the EU.

It opens every day of the year apart from 1 January, 1 May and 25 December, 10am to 5pm from October through March and 10am to 6pm from April through September, with last admission forty-five minutes before closing. Bus 66 runs from the airport to Ferney-Mairie in about thirteen minutes, roughly every half hour, and the château gates are five minutes’ walk from the stop. Trains into the city leave from under the terminal

The railway station is built into the airport itself rather than sitting across a forecourt, and services reach Genève-Cornavin, the city’s main station, in seven minutes with no change, up to seven times an hour at the busiest points of the day. A unireso zone 10 single costs CHF 3. Door to door is closer to twenty minutes once you have walked down from arrivals and waited for the next departure, and that is the figure to plan against.

What used to make this trip free no longer does: the machine in baggage reclaim that dispensed an 80-minute ticket was withdrawn at the start of 2022. Hotels still hand their guests a transport card covering the stay, which is no use to anyone connecting.

The France sector, a piece of the airport where Swiss customs do not apply

Geneva Airport straddles the border, and a designated pier on the French side operates under an old bilateral arrangement as if it were on French soil: passengers flying to or from airports in France clear French border and customs control there, not Swiss. Arrivals into it can leave the building along a dedicated customs road that runs directly into Haute-Savoie without ever joining the Swiss road network, which is how a large share of the winter ski traffic reaches the Alps without formally entering Switzerland at all.

For anyone on a layover, the thing to know is what the arrangement costs in flexibility. The Swiss and French sides connect only airside, past security, and crossing between them requires a valid boarding pass or itinerary for the same day. Whether your bag is already checked through to the next flight or still with you decides most of what follows: a connecting passenger travelling light can be at Ferney and back inside three hours, while the same trip with everything you own in tow means two border crossings and a bus each way with it.

From here the honest split is simple: under two hours, stay put; two to four, Ferney or the lake shore; more than that, cross the river and treat it as a proper afternoon.
