Yenikapı in Istanbul is the city’s largest transport interchange and the site of its biggest archaeological dig: excavating it uncovered the lost Theodosian Harbour and 37 Byzantine shipwrecks, and Kumkapı’s restaurant square is ten minutes east along the shore.
The harbour and the 37 wrecks found under the platforms
Constantinople’s main commercial port silted up and disappeared under the city centuries ago, and nobody knew exactly where it had been until the tunnelling started. Rescue excavations by the Istanbul Archaeological Museums ran from 2004 to 2013, held the rail project up for years, and pulled 37 hulls dating between the 5th and 11th centuries out of the harbour floor: the largest single group of medieval ships recovered anywhere. Below the harbour layers they found a Neolithic settlement, which pushed the known occupation of this shoreline back by thousands of years.
The finds themselves went to the Istanbul Archaeology Museums in Gülhane, a few metro stops away, where a full-size reconstruction of one of the 9th-century merchantmen stands in the garden between the buildings. A museum ticket with an audio guide is the way to see the ships, the Alexander Sarcophagus and the Kadesh treaty tablet in one visit. At Yenikapı itself there is nothing left to look at above ground: the harbour is under the concrete you are standing on.
Kumkapı, the restaurant square behind the sea wall
Ten minutes east along the shore is what was an Armenian and Greek fishing quarter, and the fishing boats still work out of the harbour below it. The centre of it is a cobbled square where every ground floor is a restaurant and the tables run right across the paving between them.
It is not a subtle place. Staff work the approaches to the square and you will be spoken to several times before you have chosen anywhere, which puts some people off entirely and is worth knowing before you commit the walk. Go for a sit-down meal and it earns the trip; go for a look and twenty minutes covers it.
One interchange, hundreds of metres of tunnel
Two metro lines, the cross-Bosphorus commuter railway, a tram and a sea-bus terminal all meet in this one complex, which is what makes it useful and also what makes it long. The transfer passages between the lines run for hundreds of metres underground, and the ferry terminal is a further walk out past the end of them, on ground reclaimed from the sea.
That distance, repeated at every change, is the argument for arriving here with nothing behind you: the walking inside the station can easily exceed the walking outside it.
No single ride from Yenikapı to the airport
Istanbul Airport is not on any of the lines that meet here. The route is the M2 metro north to Gayrettepe, then the M11 airport line west, with a ten-minute walk between the two sets of platforms in the middle, coming to about 75 to 90 minutes door to door.
The M11 starts running about 06:00 and the last airport-bound train leaves Gayrettepe after midnight, though published times differ between sources. With the two to three hours a long-haul departure wants on top of that, three hours here covers the station and Kumkapı, and five gets the museum in as well.
