Istanbul Cruise Port at Galataport
Part of the full Istanbul Layover: Sultanahmet

Istanbul’s cruise ships dock at Galataport, a 1.2-kilometre waterfront on the Bosphorus in Karaköy, the old port district, where the passenger halls are underground and the shore above is a public promenade; inside it stands Istanbul Modern, the city’s modern art museum, and across the road is a mosque built in 1580 by Sinan, the chief architect of the Ottoman court.
Galataport, the cruise terminal under the Karaköy waterfront
Galataport opened to ships in 2021 along the European shore of the Bosphorus, at the mouth of the Golden Horn, with room for three large ships at once. Passport control and the baggage halls are underground, so passengers come up by escalator onto a promenade of shops, restaurants and restored old port buildings, among them a clock tower and the 1820s Nusretiye Mosque. The Galata Tower stands on the hill behind, about 15 minutes’ walk uphill, and the T1 tram stops at Tophane, outside the gates, on its way across the Golden Horn to the old city covered in the main Istanbul guide.
Istanbul Modern’s galleries and roof terrace
Istanbul Modern, the city’s museum of modern and contemporary art, moved in 2023 into a new building inside Galataport, designed by the Italian architect Renzo Piano: a long, low block clad in pale metal panels, set right on the water. Its galleries show Turkish and international art from the twentieth century on, alongside photography and changing exhibitions, and the roof terrace looks out over the Bosphorus to the Asian shore and back toward the old city. It opens Tuesday to Sunday from 10am to 6pm, until 8pm on Fridays, and is closed on Mondays; a ticket costs a few hundred lira.

The Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque and the Tophane Fountain
The Kılıç Ali Paşa Mosque stands at Tophane, across the road from Galataport. Sinan, the architect of the Süleymaniye Mosque, built it in 1580 for Kılıç Ali Paşa, the Ottoman chief admiral, and modelled its domed prayer hall on Hagia Sophia at a smaller scale; the complex around it includes a school, a tomb and a bathhouse from 1583 that still operates. Visitors can go in outside prayer times, free, with shoulders and knees covered and shoes off.

In front of the mosque, the Tophane Fountain was built in 1732, a square marble water house under a wide overhanging roof and a small dome, its four sides carved with panels of flowers and fruit trees. It stands on the square on the way from the tram stop, free to see at any hour.
Left luggage at Galataport
Galataport has a left-luggage service at its visitor center, by the terminal entrance, which stores suitcases and bags by the hour, so the museum and the mosque can be done without them. Luggage storage points also operate in Karaköy and around Taksim Square, on the way to the airport bus.
Istanbul Airport is about an hour from Galataport by road
Istanbul Airport, the city’s main airport, north of the city near the Black Sea coast, is 55 to 75 minutes from Galataport by taxi, depending on traffic. The cheaper route is the T1 tram two stops from Tophane to Kabataş, the funicular up to Taksim Square, and the Havaist airport bus from there, about 90 minutes. For Sabiha Gökçen, the airport on the Asian side, allow 60 to 90 minutes by taxi, and in either case at least three hours before an international departure.
