Dubai Marina and JBR Beach, Dubai

Dubai Marina wraps a 3-kilometre man-made canal in towers, Cayan Tower’s 90-degree twist among them, with boat trips leaving from its quays and the free public beach at JBR at its seaward end.

Two metro stations at the marina’s landward edge

The Dubai Tram runs along the Jumeirah Beach Residence side of Dubai Marina and connects with two Red Line metro stations, Sobha Realty and DMCC, at the landward edge of the marina. From either, the Red Line takes roughly 50 minutes to Airport Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport (DXB), a few minutes less to Terminal 1, for a few dirhams on a Silver nol card; with the tram or the walk to the station added, plan on well over an hour door to door. A taxi avoids the change but not the distance, and it is the only direct option for Terminal 2, which has no metro station. Leave 90 minutes at the airport on top of that.

Speedboats and dinner cruises from the marina’s quays

Dubai Marina was dug out of the coast as a canal about 3 kilometres long, and the water gives the widest view of what was built around it. Two kinds of trip leave from the marina itself. A speedboat tour runs out of the canal mouth and along the coast for a view of the towers from offshore; in the evening, a dinner cruise spends an hour and a half to two hours going slowly up and down the canal itself, with the buildings lit on both banks.

Boarding for the dinner cruises opens 30 to 45 minutes before departure, so the whole evening is closer to two and a half hours than two, which matters with a flight to catch from the far side of the city.

Marina Walk and the twist of Cayan Tower

The Marina Walk is the promenade that follows the canal on both banks, around seven kilometres in total and free to walk, with restaurants and cafes along much of it. The building that stands out is Cayan Tower, finished in 2013, whose floors each turn a little further than the one below, so the tower rotates through a full 90 degrees between its base and its top.

The loop is long enough that a walk to see one tower and come back can take an hour, and every extra kilometre is one more for anything you are pulling behind you.

The free public beach at JBR

Jumeirah Beach Residence, the row of residential towers on the seaward side of the marina, fronts a public beach that costs nothing to use, with lifeguards on duty and free showers. Behind the sand runs The Walk, a 1.7-kilometre strip of shops, cafes and restaurants, and the open-air mall called The Beach.

The beach faces the Gulf to the west, so late afternoon is when the light is best and the heat starts to ease.

The long ride back to the airport is the reason to come here only with a longer gap. With less time, the full Dubai itinerary keeps everything much closer to the airport, and Burj Khalifa and Dubai Mall sit roughly halfway back along the same line. Without a bag, the marina is a place to walk, swim and sit by the water rather than to cross as quickly as possible.
