If you’d rather spend your layover on one big view than a multi-stop walking loop, store your bag before crossing the Arno and make the climb to Piazzale Michelangelo: the skyline payoff is immediate, and there’s a quieter second stop just above it if you want more.

Can’t-miss

The whole point of coming here is the view: from the terrace, the Duomo’s dome, Palazzo Vecchio’s tower, and Ponte Vecchio all line up across the river in one frame, which is why this spot shows up on so many Florence postcards. Come at golden hour if your flight timing allows it; midday works too, just with harsher light and a busier terrace.

With energy left over, keep climbing another few minutes to the Basilica di San Miniato al Monte, one of the oldest churches in the city and considerably less crowded than the viewpoint below it. Its striped marble facade and gold mosaic are worth the extra legwork on their own.

Why hands-free matters on this climb

This isn’t a flat city-center stroll: the Poggi Ramps gain real elevation in a short distance, and doing that climb with a rolling bag means either carrying it up stairs or dragging it over uneven switchbacks, neither of which is worth the effort for a viewpoint you came to enjoy, not fight.

If you have more time

Linger at San Miniato al Monte’s small cemetery and cloister if it’s open, or take the walk back down slowly via Via di San Niccolò instead of retracing your steps, which puts you past the Torre di San Niccolò and a strip of lower-key bars and gelaterias favored by locals rather than tour groups.

Getting to Florence Airport

Head back down toward Ponte Vecchio and pick up the T2 tram at the Alamanni/Unità stop near Santa Maria Novella; the ride to Florence Airport takes about 20-22 minutes. Because the descent and walk back into the center take 20-25 minutes on their own, leave Piazzale Michelangelo at least 2 hours before your flight.

Walk more, carry less

The climb to Piazzale Michelangelo rewards you with one of the best views in Florence, and it’s a much better experience without a suitcase working against you the whole way up. Store the bag before you cross the river and the whole detour stays worth it.

Frequently asked questions

Is the walk up to Piazzale Michelangelo hard?

It's a genuine climb, not a stroll: figure 20-25 minutes from Ponte Vecchio, with the last stretch up the Poggi Ramps gaining most of the elevation in a few minutes. It's steep enough that you'll notice it, but nothing technical.

Can I skip the walk and still get the view?

Yes. Bus 12 or 13 from the Rotonda Barbetti stop near Santa Maria Novella runs up to Piazzale Michelangelo or San Miniato al Monte in about 20 minutes, which is worth it if your time window is tight or you'd rather save your legs for after.

Is it worth continuing up to San Miniato al Monte?

If you have the extra 10-15 minutes, yes: it's a further short climb above the piazzale itself, and its green-and-white marble facade and mosaic are a quieter, less crowded payoff than the viewpoint below it.

Is there anywhere to store a bag near here, or do I need to go back to the center first?

This is an Oltrarno-side itinerary, so it makes sense to drop your bag before you cross the river rather than carrying it up the hill; storage points are concentrated in the center, so plan the drop-off as your first stop, not something to arrange once you're already at the top.

How early should I head back for a flight out of Peretola?

Give yourself extra buffer here compared to a center-based itinerary: coming back down from Piazzale Michelangelo and then to the T2 tram stop near Santa Maria Novella takes 20-25 minutes on its own, on top of the tram ride and airport time. Leave the viewpoint at least 2 hours before your flight.
