Nice-Ville sits at the top of Avenue Jean Médecin, the city’s main pedestrian shopping street: it runs in a dead-straight line down to the sea, so there’s no real way to get turned around, and it’s lined with cafes if you want to sit down before doing anything else.
The avenue ends at Place Masséna, where the Miroir d’Eau (water mirror) spreads a thin sheet of water across 3,000 square meters of paving, throwing back a near-perfect reflection of the surrounding red facades and palm trees whenever the jets settle. It’s one of the more photogenic spots in the city and costs nothing to walk through.
Why hands-free matters starting from a train station
Nice-Ville gets crowded around arrivals and departures, and hauling a bag down a kilometer of shopping street, through a fountain plaza, and into the Old Town’s narrow lanes turns a pleasant walk into a chore. Storing it first means one less thing to watch over in a station that doesn’t have reliable left-luggage of its own.
If you have more time
Beyond Place Masséna, the Promenade du Paillon gardens stretch for over a kilometer along what used to be a riverbed, now covering fountains, children’s play areas, and wide lawns shaded by palm and olive trees; it’s an easy, flat place to walk off the last hour before deciding what’s next.
With time still to spare, continue past the gardens into Vieux Nice: the Old Town’s alleys sit just beyond the Paillon, so this route reaches the same neighborhood as a trip starting from the airport, just from the opposite direction and at a slower pace.
Getting to Nice Côte d’Azur Airport
From either Place Masséna or the Old Town’s edge, pick up Tram Line 2 toward the airport; it also has stops near Jean Médecin if you’d rather not backtrack to the station. Budget around 30 minutes for the tram plus check-in and security.
One bag, one straight line
Arriving by train already gives you a clean, direct route into the city; storing your bag at the start keeps it that way; you’ll cover the same ground on foot without doubling back for a locker or lugging a suitcase across cobblestones.
